Jack Passings – April 2024

PHILLIPS Arthur Joseph (NZA 616509, RNZN 8713). Passed away peacefully, in his 101st year. Very dearly loved husband of the late Mavis for 73 years. Much loved father of Stephen, Lloyd, and Alison, and loved and adored by their extended families. Grateful thanks for the wonderful care and affection from the staff of The Wood Retirement Village, Nelson, where he enjoyed his final two years.

MARSH Keith Frederick CPO DRIVER N19608 It is with regret that I pass on the news that Keith passed away this morning. Further details will be published in due course.

LADD John Oliver, Captain RNZN Q19955 Joined 1/70 CTB last Friday night. Funeral this coming Friday (26/4) 1100 at Legacy Papamoa. 27 October 1951 – 19 April 2024. Passed away suddenly at Tauranga Hospital on 19th April 2024 aged 72 years. Dearly loved husband of Wendy, cherished father and father-in-law of Victoria and Aaron, Anna and Perry. Treasured Jojo (Grandad) of Madeleine, Rosie, Ollie, Poppy and Leola. A very special gentleman to the many lives he touched. A service to celebrate John’s life will be held at Legacy Papamoa, 53 Te Okuroa Drive Papamoa on Friday 26th April at 11:00am. WALKER, Barry Francis (Biff). REM NZ152756, Joined 1/55 Royalist 57-58 Peacefully on 19 April 2024. Aged 86 years. Loved by many and will be missed. A celebration of Barry’s life will be held at Central Park Chapel of Davis Funerals, 150 Central Park Drive, Henderson on Saturday 27 April 2024 at 10am. Member of the Waterpolo squad and great shipmate and friend. Went on to NAC as a pilot and later to AIR NZ. Became a senior pilot. A very charismatic bloke who will be sorely missed.

SCOLES Norman Joseph (Norm) DSM LSEA RNZN S/NO NZ11231 Korea Joined &/46 – 10th Seaman Boys. Norm passed away on April 14, 2024, at Essie Summers Retirement Village; aged 94 years. A loved husband of the late Wilma, loved and treasured Dad, father-in-law and friend of Lesley and Chris Bird, Christine and Don Jeffery (Canberra). Much loved pop of Simon, Brooke, Evie and Thomas Bird (New Plymouth), Andrew, Merryn, Frankie and Banks Bird. JUDGE, David Julian NZ13214 Leading Seaman RNZN (Korea) Joined 2/50: Passed away suddenly but peacefully at Waikato Hospital, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, 6 April 2024, aged 91 years. Dearly loved husband of Heather for 64 years. Proud father and father-in-law of Peter & Elaina, Tim & Michelle, Amanda & Wayne, and Matthew & Jo. Sadly missed by all, you will never be forgotten. Service to be held at Auckland Memorial Park on Sunday 14 April at 1.00 pm

FAIRFAX Denis Peter Commander, OStJ MA, RNZN (Rtd) passed away in Kenepuru Hospital on 09/04/24 after a long battle with cancer. He was a stalwart member of the League, having served on the committee for eleven years and as President of the Wellington Branch in 2016, 2017and 2018. He was very much involved in the organisation of the many conferences which were sponsored by the Wellington Branch. His services to the League were recognised by the award of the Special Service Medal. It is expected that his funeral service will be held on Monday 15 April 2024, but details will be emailed as soon as they are confirmed.

BROWN, Richard Frances (Bomber) RNZN NZ18753 ABSEA Joined 66 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Frances Brown, on Thursday the 4th of April 2024. Dearly loved by the whānau Pani. He will be missed, and we know that he has returned back home. We will be bringing Dad back home on Saturday the 6th of April. He will lie at Evans Funeral Services until Tuesday, when we will have his poroporoaki. Further details about the service will be given at a later date. “Mā te atua e tiaki”

WOOLSTON Alfred 13796 Ex RN WW2, then RNZN Leading Steward. Joined RNZN 1952. Died 21 April 1984 aged 56.

SOLLITT Paul Lewis passed away at his home in Ruatoria (after a short illness) Sunday 7 April 2024. RNZ Navy serviceman 17359. Born the 21 July 1945 The son of Rona & Lewis Sollitt of Christchurch, and treasured son in law of Te Iwi Pani and David Morice, Kahuitara. Brother of Judy Provis, Hokitika. Husband of 59 years to Hinewairere Elizabeth Sollitt nee Haua Morice (Betty) Father of ; Peter Murray (Sister Pete) Bernadette Althea (Bernie) Margo Atawhai (Atawhai) Barry Te Reweti Rangi (Choppies) Martin Te Moana nui (Dushy). Adored father in law of Lea and Kim, and papa of his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Paul will depart Gisborne for Hiruharama Pa arriving approximately 5.30pm Sunday 7 April 2024. He will be buried at Korokota urupa, Kahuitara. His funeral service will be Wednesday 10 April 2024, at 11am. Hiruharama Pā. He heremana. He tangata humarie, he tangata pumau ki tona whanau, ki te hapori o Ruatoria hoki. He tangata ngakaunui ki te karapu, Hikurangi!

SORTAIN-SMITH, Richard Service No. 10151. RNZN. WWII Joined as BOY2. Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, 2 April 2024, just short of his 96th birthday, at Glenwood Masonic Hospital, Masterton. Dearly loved husband of Gillian (deceased). Loved father and father-in-law of Bridget and Norris, Gary and Sarah Kaye, and Michael and Nancy (Scotland). Grandad to George and Hamish, Kirstie and Euan, and brother and brother-in-law of Diane and the late Maurie Stuart (Taupo). A special thank you to the wonderful staff at Glenwood for their care of Richard over the past year, and to GSU’s at Wellington and Masterton Hospitals.
