Rare access to poignant naval committals

Every week during the summer months, a group of strangers gathers at Portsmouth naval base. They have never met one another before, and likely never will again, but they are united by a shared purpose: each is there to say goodbye to a family member that has served their country at sea.

It’s a little-known fact that any sailor or marine can have their ashes scattered at sea, free of charge, in a ceremony that honours their relationship with the water and returns them to its depths.
