Historical – Torpedoes, Tragedy, and Rescue in the South China Sea

On September 12, 1944, three American submarines—the USS Growler, USS Sealion, and USS Pampanito—patrolled the South China Sea in a coordinated “wolfpack.” Having intercepted coded Japanese naval transmissions days earlier, they were awaiting a Japanese convoy ferrying supplies from Singapore to Japan to help the Japanese war effort.
