Yesteryear, Pussers became concerned that some sailors would not fit thru an Escape Hatch . A medical examination was introduced to ensure sailors who were posted to sea-going billets had to meet a certain size criteria. Naturally, I passed this test! I reckon Naval Architects must have used a, e.g. a Biafran as a measuring tool for ship design!
Well, you certainly wouldn’t pass the test now…
From memory that was an outcome of the Court of Enquiry following the sinking of HMAS Voyager.
Seem to recollect that the Buffer, MAA or similar could not fit through the escape hatch and spent the last minutes of his life passing sailors up to safety.
