What happens to a ship when it is too small?

The following images are of HMNZS KAHU which has undergone a major rebuild to add some length to it at the Fitzroys Yard in New Plymouth. Maybe they should have done the same procedure to the ‘Lake Class’ Patrol craft instead of cutting the length before delivery.
