Happy 100th Birthday, James Frank “Jim” Blackburn!

On Sunday, 26th Ocotber 2026, we celebrate a remarkable milestone as Chief Petty Officer Radio Supervisor James Frank “Jim” Blackburn reaches the magnificent age of 100 years.

Jim will no doubt have received his congratulatory message from His Majesty The King, along with many other well-deserved messages of congratulations from dignitaries, family, and friends.

It is especially fitting that Jim is celebrating his centenary at the Senior Rates’ Mess, HMNZS PHILOMEL. As the first President of the Mess when it opened, the venue holds a special place in his naval history. Throughout the years, Jim has served the Senior Rates’ Mess in many roles, including as Chief “Chippy”, earning the respect and friendship of generations of sailors.

Jim, we hope you thoroughly enjoy your special day, surrounded by your family, friends, and your naval family—back in the Navy, where your heart and soul have belonged for so many years.
