⚓️NEWLAND, Michael F. POMT(P) RNZN
Michael CTB this afternoon 10-11-25, in Nurse Maude Hospice. Please see below for the post from his wife Julie.
After thirteen days at hospice, battling to the very end, Mike left us today. It’s nearly two years to the day from when he was first diagnosed with aggressive bowel cancer that had already spread to his liver and lungs. In the weekends leading up to this totally unexpected and devastating diagnosis, Mike was sailing with the family in the Marlborough Sounds, taking James and his friends out biscuiting in Lyttelton Harbour on our boat, and enjoying cocktails with the neighbours at our bach in Little Akaloa. His love for the water, and friends and family, was always at the centre of everything he did.
Mike always lived his best life, and continued to do so even during gruelling hospital stays, chemotherapy regimens and debilitating cancer symptoms. He remained relentlessly optimistic right up until the very end, yet was also a pragmatist, ensuring that everything was in order for James and I before he died. The love and support from his family and friends sustained him to the very end, and we feel so privileged to have felt such unconditional love from all of you throughout this.
We will miss him terribly.
As per Mike’s wishes, a service to celebrate his life will be held at Lamb & Hayward Oaklands Halswell, 500 Wigram Road, Halswell at 2.30pm on Thursday 13 November. This will be followed by refreshments at the venue and an after party more suited to Mike’s taste. Details of the latter will be confirmed soon.
