The Communications School – 1941
Here is an article taken from the New Zealand Herald, 5 December 1941 in front of the “new and commodious” Communications School. The school was located opposite what is now the Junior Rates Mess on the seaward side. These were the green classroom block which stretched from the Commonwealth Grave Memorial down to the cell blocks in PHILOMEL. Thanks Fred W for the image. I wonder if anyone recognises any of the instructors.
Bottom Right Photo – the Chief Yeoman with the walking stick is Chief Yeoman ‘Bully’ Martinson who served in HMNZS ACHILLES at the Battle of the River Plate. The walking stick is the result of injuries received at the battle.
