Searching for Answers on HMS New Zealand
I am researching HMS New Zealand and have recently participated in reviving the silk White Ensign and Union Jack presented to the ship in 1913 by the Women’s Section of the Timaru Branch of the Navy League. The Ensign was flown at the foremast top during all the actions the ship was involved in and both flags were on the foremast yardarm when the ship escorted the German High Seas Fleet into internment at the Firth of Forth and then Scapa Flow.

The flags were made by Lane & Neeve in London and when I looked at them, the Jack has the stick sewn in so that it goes close up, but the Ensign does not. So the question for all Bunting Tossers (and others) is ……. Why would this be? If they put the stick in for the Jack, why not the Ensign? Any ideas gratefully received to kf.wilson@xtra.co.nz.
