The First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Ben Key, has confirmed that all four of the Royal Navy’s major training establishments will be commanded by women by the end of this year.

Britannia Royal Naval College, HMS Raleigh and HMS Collingwood are already under the command of Captains Sarah Oakley, Suzi Nielsen, and Catherine Jordan respectively.

Later this year, another woman – yet unnamed – will take over command of HMS Sultan, making all the primary training establishments fully women-led.

The appointments come as the Royal Navy tries to recruit more women to the service and rebuff criticism of female under-representation in senior roles.
