To Neal Catley,
I served on Waikato on the 1967/8 deployment to the Far East and also as part of the ANZUK Force 1971/73.
Recently I was going through some old photos my daughter has and found a NZ Herald photo and article showing the departure of the Waikato from Devonport. Having read a number of pieces on this website about the ongoing battle with the NZ Government about recognition for those involved in these deployments, I was very surprised to read in the article that Waikato was deploying to join the FESR.
Keep up the fight Neal.
My regards to you and to Jim Dell.
Patrick Dwen H18131. CPOREA.
Hello Patrick,
Thank you for your encouragement and supportive words, which is much appreciated. It would, however, be inappropriate of me not to advise that the RNZNCA presently has a dedicated subcommittee [Messrs Gary Houghton {President}, Frank Rands, John Titmus, Rod Berry and myself] who have been corresponding with successive Ministers of Defence, Chief Defence Force and their senior staff over the past seven [7] years to bring the FESR/ANZUK medallic recognition to a positive end. It is not rocket science! To rehearse, if the Australian and the United Kingdom military allied band-of-brothers and sisters who have long worn the rewards of the same service given by New Zealanders – why hasn’t the identical awards/rewards been given to all of those Kiwis who served? To me, it seems like a grotesque mockery of the way the commonwealth military allied system should operate. And, that of itself is saddening!
It is understood the Minister of Defence [Hon, Peeni Henare] has received a FESR/ANZUK medallic recognition paper from the Chief Defence Force. The MoD is presently looking at it. Watch this space.
Hello Neal,
I would like to thank you, the sub-committee and all others involved in obtaining medallic recognition. My late husband Eric Pearce served on the Royalist and I recently applied for his medals in his memory, and in recognition of his military service. My family and I are delighted to receive his medals, and we are very pleased that this issue has had a positive outcome. I would also like to thank John Bullock for helping me navigate the process.
Kind regards,
Robyn Pearce
