ROYAL NAVY PAY DOCKED AFTER M.O.D. OVERPAYMENT

Navy personnel will have the right to appeal the repayments decision
More than 400 current and former Royal Navy personnel have been overpaid after a mistake by the Ministry of Defence.
Any overpayment will have to be repaid, and in most cases servicemen and
women will be docked up to four days’ pay a month until the £1.2m is paid
back.
The Daily Mirror has reported that one sailor has been told he must repay
£17,000, and another just £9.
The MoD confirmed a number of navy personnel had been overpaid and had
arranged for repayments to be made.
The Mirror said servicemen and women found out on Monday in an letter after
a lengthy investigation by the MoD.
The defence ministry confirmed 423 members and former members of the Navy
had been affected over several years.
Serving personnel have had their salaries adjusted to the correct level,
while those who have now left the military will have to repay the money in
instalments.
The MoD has a duty to recover overpayment of public funds, according to its
own policy and that of the Treasury.
In a statement, the MoD said: “We can confirm that an overpayment of salary
has been made to a number of Navy personnel.
“We have apologised to all of those affected and in accordance with standard
government practice, arrangements are in place for repayment of monies
wrongly received.
“Where repayment of monies is appropriate, procedures are in place to
prevent any hardship to individuals.”
Servicemen and women are able to appeal against the decision through the
Service Personnel and Veterans Agency.
