Records held by the NZDF
The New Zealand Defence Force formerly held records on most servicemen and women who served in the NZDF from the Boer War to the present day.
From March 2005, all personnel files of service personnel serving before 31 December 1920 were progressively transferred into the permanent care of Archives New Zealand. The Chief of Defence Force and the Chief Archivist have agreed to this transfer because it acknowledges the importance of these files to the history of New Zealand and to ensure they are preserved for posterity.
Consequently South African War files are no longer available from the NZDF. Requests should be placed with

All New Zealand citizens and residents have the right to obtain official information from government agencies. Information about Deceased Persons is covered by the Official Information Act 1982. Information about Living Persons is covered by the Privacy Act 1993.
