Passing of a Chief of Naval Staff

It is with sadness that I advise the death of ex Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Edward (Teddy) Thorne CB, CBE . Ted passed away yesterday morning in Auckland Hospital after a short illness.  Ted’s health had deteriorated over the last few months and he was a resident of the Retirement Village Remuera Gardens. Ted’s funeral will be held at St Christopher’s Chapel in the Naval Base on Thursday, 31 October 2013 at 1300.   Please remember to bring some form of identification for entry into the base.
Ted was a Long ‘C’ Communicator and completed his Course at Mercury in 1948. He was the Commanding Officer of IRIRANGI, Christmas of 1953 when the Tangiwai Disaster occurred and also went on loan to the Royal Navy as the Fleet Communications Officer Far East Fleet  1957-58.   He was Chief of Naval Staff from July 1972 until November 1975 and Patron of the RNZN Communications Association.
