SHIP OF THE WEEK – HMNZS ARABIS
HMNZS Arabis was a Flower-class corvette gifted to the RNZN for war service escort duties during WWll. She arrived in NZ in June 1944 and was returned to the RN with HMNZS Arbutus in April 1948. Her crest, designed by HMNZS Dockyard in 1947, was never formally adopted. There were a total of 267 Flower-class anti-submarine escorts built, mostly for the Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy use.
On 15 September 1915, gender-neutral names were introduced into the RNZN, including Seaman Officer to Seamanship Officer and Helicopter Crewman to Helicopter Crewperson. A few weeks later, the latter was changed again to Helicopter Loadmaster, and Naval Policeman was changed to Military Police.
