National Archives – Volunteers
Where have all the records gone? At a recent meeting, your Committee discussed an interesting concept of conducting research at the National Archives. It would appear that there may be a large amount of information, photos, records etc. being stored in the Archives however, due to the lack of funding and staffing this information will never see the light of day unless someone pulls it from the depths. As with everything, storage space becomes more scarce and paper records continue to grow. The Archives hold over 4,000,000 records. To get some idea of the holdings click HERE.
As many of you have shown interest on investigating things historical and there has been much scratching of many grey heads. We believe there may be an opportunity for members to undertake some training within Archives and do some research on behalf of the Association.
The National Archives Offices are situated at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Physical addresses can be located by clicking HERE .
Due to the training volunteers would undergo, this project would be a long term commitment. It would provide another avenue for many old ship mates to enjoy the camaraderie of each other with a common purpose of saving and bringing to light our valuable history.
So if you have a bit of time to spare and think you would like to contribute by becoming a historical researcher then this could be you. Please drop us an email at sandy.watson@xtra.co.nz and we will work together on how best to tackle this issue.
