REID, John Curle. RNZN Service No.14063 Able Seaman Late of Auckland and Taupo, died in Rotorua Hospital, on Saturday 31st July 2021, aged 87. Cherished and devoted husband of Mary, father of Vicki and Jaqueline (Australia), Janine, Colin, Dean, Bruce, and Robert. Service at 2:00 pm on Tuesday 3rd August, Osborne’s Funeral Directors, 197 Old Taupo Road Rotorua, followed by private cremation. Communications to the Reid Family c/- PO Box 926, Rotorua.
COOKE Kevin a sparker in the 70s – has crossed the bar from Covid 19 complications in Rio de Janeiro recently. He had been in Brazil for 13 years and has been trying to return to New Zealand for the past 2 years. Geoff Buttirini was in contact with him earlier this year and he was really looking forward to returning to Northland and being reunited with his family. He may be cremated and his ashes may be returned to NZ at some time. Geoff is in contact with his sister and will pass on any information as it is received.
MAITLAND Peter Terence 710664 Ex CNR Leading Telegraphist. In Melbourne, Australia Wednesday, 21st July 2021. Peter served in TAMAKI, PHILOMEL, HAWEA, KIWI, IRIRANGI, CERBERUS, WAKEFIELD and ROYALIST. Peter joined the RNZN in 1953 and was discharged in 1958. Peter was on Royalist for the 1957-58 trip and was one of four sailors who caught TB and was landed at the British Military Hospital, Singapore before Christmas 1957 and did not get back to NZ until the following May as they were not allowed to fly, and there was no ship with suitable medical accommodation that could take them. He has been living in the Melbourne area for a good many years.
BARLOW, Philip James (Lucky). (Serv. No. U18510, P/O F.C.1, NZ Navy.) At Thames, after a battle with cancer, on Friday 23rd July 2021; aged 72 years. Dearly loved husband and best friend of Raewyn. Much loved Dad of Laura and Jessica also Raewyn’s children Brent and Grant. Loving Grandad of all his grandchildren. Brother of Brian and Warren. You were a brave and courageous man and no longer suffering. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. A service to celebrate Philip’s life will be held at St George the Martyr Anglican Church, 600 Mackay Street, Thames on Saturday 31st July at 11:00 am, followed by private cremation.
STRANGE, Charles William (Chas). Service No. NZ10460 RNZN WWII On 11 July 2021 suddenly at Whangaroa Harbour. Aged 95 years. Dearly beloved husband of the late Yvonne. Loved father and father-in-law of John and Jacqui and Brett and Debra. Loved Granddad of Calem and Jasmine, Selena and John and Alyssa; Natalie, Nicole and Thomas, Nicolas and Hannah. Great Grandfather of 10. Life is about the voyage, not how long it takes to get there. A service to celebrate and honour the life of Chas will be held at the Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club, 573 Whangaroa Road, Kaeo at 2:00 pm tomorrow Saturday 24 July 2021 prior to interment at the Kaeo Public Cemetery.
GOSNEY, Gavin. ME1 F19717, Joined 21 May 69. Peacefully at his home in Taumarunui on Sunday 18th July 2021 Gavin cast his last line. Much loved best mate and other half to Michelle. KELLY, James (Jim). ABSEA NZ8225 RNZN/RNZNVR.Suddenly on 8th July, aged 96. Beloved husband of the late Patricia, father and father in law of Judy, Graeme and Linda, Robyn and Paul, and Dianne. Loving grandfather to11, great grandfather to 13. Gone to join Patricia but forever in our hearts. GUDSELL, Maurice Louisson (Lou): Serv. No. 16993, EM 1st Class, RNZN. Passed away suddenly but peacefully on Wednesday, 7 July 2021, at Arohanui Hospice after a short illness. Beloved husband and soulmate of Joan for 31 years. Dearly loved brother of Laurie, and the late Bob. A much-loved son, uncle and friend to many. Messages to Mrs J. Died at peace after a short illness on July 3rd aged 95 at Bernadette Rest Home. Dearly loved husband of Pat (deceased), of Jon and Cindy (Karaka, Auckland), Trish and Doug (Gold Coast, Australia), Jackie and Greg (Lake Mumorah, Australia), Chris and Jane (Byron Bay, Australia).
