BRADLEY, Ian – This is an update (including funeral details) of our 22 June announcement of the passing of CAPT Ian Bradley, RNZN (Ret), who died suddenly in Charleston, South Carolina on Saturday 20 June, just short of his 78th birthday. CAPT Bradley served 27 years in the RNZN, beginning as a Midshipman in 1953. Amongst his postings, he served on the commissioning crew of the frigate HMNZS OTAGO and was Executive Officer of the frigate HMNZS CANTERBURY. One of the Navy’s true characters, whilst Commanding Officer of HMNZS WAIKATO, he famously drove the frigate to rescue a USN Sea King helicopter that was low on fuel; despite being too big for the frigate’s flight deck, it safely landed diagonally rather than having to ditch in the sea. A funeral service will be held at St Christopher’s Chapel, Devonport Naval Base, at 1300 on Tuesday 14 July. Rig for serving personnel attending the service, RNZN 1B (negative swords).

Richard Hale — my first Commanding Officer at sea in Otago. I remember him well 🙂
Miles Murphy may not be well rembered here. But that is not the case on the Auckland waterfront. Miles was a Master on the Devonport ferry and other commercial craft for years. A quiet bloke he was good with passengers. President of Takapuna RSA. during some tough times. Stood for parliament for one of those obscure parties that are now forgotten.
Amazing that Richard T and Ian Bradley lost at the same time. Both had a big impact in their time.
It will not be common knowledge that Bradley sorted out the sideboard issue. Remember the world had them down to the chin. In the RNZN they had to be near the top of the head. Bradley negotiated with the Board that sideboards could be level with the bottom of your ear. Does not sound like much but back then. As you would expect the M message came out the day after everybody came back from xmas leave.
Aren’t sideboards something you have in the dining room? Sideburns on the other hand…
