Doc Frew…. Who can forget his CHECK THE BREATHING, STOP THE BLEEDING, STOP THE SHOCK, STOP THE PAIN….. Royalist FTG Hawaii 1962. You were a legend Doc and 50 or so years on it still works on Coastguard first aid jobs. Doc should also be remembered as an outstanding yachtsman and member of the RNZN Sailing Club.
His advice to young sailors on protected intercourse is probably not printable in this forum.
After a particularly good run ashore in Singapore – Royalist 1965 – I had occasion to visit Doc Frew who called me “a filthy little devil and how would I like it if he wrote and told my mother what I had been up to”. To which I replied that I rather he didn’t as it would give her a bit of a shock. His response to that was to tell the Chief Sick Bay Tiff to give me a cold one out of the fridge and a weeks stoppage of leave. I found out very quickly that “a cold one” didn’t mean a can of beer…
yes james, it was like pieces of ice parting the fat in the cheeks of ur ar,,bottom and oh im only guessing that is what it was like…
Why Gunth – you ol’ devil you!
well that is what i was told anyway
Yeah, rite!
Dear old Doc Frew-operated on my finger (yes finger) once, kept up a running commentary on what he was doing-“Now that’s interesting, it”s sort of a cyst thing etc etc”- two weeks excused typing-still have the scar today. Sort of a fitting memorial I guess…….
Casper
Fine guy! Liked his typical “Scotts humour” – “your blood pressure is up laard! too much fatty fooods!!” In more recent times he was identified by the personal number plate on his BMW –
“DICDOC” how fitting. Rest easy Doc.
I remember fronting up to Doc Frew for my first medical in pussers.Walked in his room & he looked at me & said “strapping young man, pants down, turn around, bend down & pull your cheeks apart”I immediately pulled my cheeks apart on my face, which did not impress him.I cannot remember his reply,as I was laughing.Great guy, served on Royalist with him & he got me back with a “few cold ones ” that trip.
