Farewell Bruce to your new life beyond the clouds. I understand from higher authority you were met by a special ‘Signals Branch Welcoming Party’ in full regalia to pipe you onboard. BZ Signals!
Bruce, you will be well remembered for your communication expertise, dedication to the task[s] in hand and, especially your loyalty to the RNZN over many years. It’s now time for bags of R and R and to listen to David Bowie’s Space Oddity hit song: “Ground Control to Warrant Officer Bruce Kenyon.” Your mission on planet earth is complete. Well said Neal. I have great memories of Bruce as my Yeoman on the Otago when I was SCO. An honourable and honest guy and as you have so rightly said- dedicated to the Signals branch. So sad to read of his passing.RIP Bruce enjoy your long deserved R&R.

Saddened by the news of a great Signalman passing away
Got to know Bruce when in DCC Wellington (1974/75) he was PSG and I was newly promoted LSG. Great guy we became good friends. Served with Bruce again on HMNZS Otago, I was his Killick, 1977 trip to Rimpac 77, States and Canada. The Commitment made by Bruce during the 38days at sea during Rimpac 77 was professionalism at its height especially when we lost 2 ratings overboard during a RAS.
Lost contact with Bruce and Carol mid nineties.
Bruce,
No more a watch to stand old sailor. For you are drifting on an ebbing tide. Eight Bells have rung Dog Watch is done. A new berth waits you on the other side.
Your ship is anchored on God’s harbour, and though his sailors are of equal rank, there’ll be Shipmates on the deck to greet you and pipe you, as you ascend the Plank.
Her boilers with full head of steam, cargo stowed and galley stored. Just waiting to get underway, when the last hand comes aboard.
Bruce, Look Sharp! That hand is you, Old Sailor, and you’ll be sailing on Heavenly Seas.
So may the wind be ever at your back Fair Weather and God Speed my Friend.
You will be missed.
Terry Patterson
RIP Bruce, many a good run ashore was shared and remembered.
Blessing to Carol. Keith Ingram
I was with Bruce on Otago long time ago and stopped in Honiara and went to a local bar. Bruce had a guitar so us and the locals had a sing a long, but the locals wouldn’t let him stop playing. In the end we did an escape and Bruce had bloody fingers from the extensive guitar playing. RIP
Served with Bruce on Otago 75/76. Another great run ashore oppo has CTB. One run was in Georgetown, Penang, where we visited the Ah Chew bar. I purchased a couple of T-shirts which said “I survived the Ah Chew Bar”. Unfortunately I left them on the trishaw when we got back to the jetty. I only saw Bruce again at the occasional Senior Communicators conferences. RIP Bruce.
I had the privilege of having Bruce as my killick on Waikato (can’t just recall what year though). A great asset to the VS Dept. As normal, the killick looked after the V/S store on O1 Deck but was temporarily taken over by Chang Kee the Tailor, Anyway, we acquired quite an array of stuff and additional rabbits thanks to Bruce’s wit and methods.
Rest in Peace Bruce.
Farewell Bruce. I lost contact with most Naval people when I left pusses. I was an ASG under him on Blackpool or maybe Otago – early 70’s I think. I remember that he could always identify merchant ships when we left port. I thought he was so clever. Then I caught him scanning the local newspapers before we left port looking at the ship movements. That actually is clever!
I had the privilege of working with Bruce when we were both Killicks in Philomel during the early 1970s. Society was changing and we convinced the CO that the old “Wets” was not up to standard. So we were tasked to find an alternative. After sourcing funding from the Armed Forces Canteen Council, we were successful in creating the Junior Rates Club. Bruce was the driving force behind the project and we were proud to see it served the Junior Rates for many years after we left. RIP Bruce. I shall always remember you and the great times we had playing the guitar together.
