CREED Bartlett Eric Service No. NZ5608 LDG TEL. On 16 January aged 87 years. Bartlett served in TAMAKI, PHILOMEL, North Head and DRAKE between 30 July 1942 and 19 June 1944.
HARRIS Ralph Ernest. NZ1958 SIG. On January 10, 2011 at Cambridge; Aged 85. Father of Glenn, father-in-law of Jeanette and grandfather of Kevin, Donna (deceased) and Kim. Rest in Peace. Ralph served in TAMAKI, NOCD, PHILOMEL, WAIPU, TASMAN, and INCHKEITH. He joined the RNZN in Aug 1943 and left in April 1947.
LUCY Scott William Emerson V186572 Able Hydrographer. died 22 February 2011 during Christchurch Earthquake. Scott was killed in the collapse of the Durham St Methodist Church where he was working with a team from the South Island Organ Company. His funeral was held on Saturday, 5 March 2011 at the Chalmers Presbyterian Church attended by a large congregation including a number of his former shipmates. Scott served in TAMAKI, MONOWAI, TARAPUNGA, TAKAPU, and WAIKATO. He joined the RNZN Feb 1991 and left October 1999.
HALL Alfred Lindsay Smith. RNZN 8807, Ordinary Signalman, WWII. 6 September 1921 – 28 February 2011 peacefully at Matariki Hospital after a short illness. Beloved husband of 65 years of May. Loved and loving Father of Sandra, Christopher and Anne. Poppa Lindsay to Aaron, Brenton and Theo. “One day when we were young, one wonderful morning in May, you told me you loved me, when we were young one day.” A Service to celebrate Lindsay’s life will be held at The Methodist Church, 261 Bank Street, Te Awamutu on Saturday 5 March at 11.00am followed by a private cremation. BAYES Kenneth John (Ken) NZ7451 Ordinary Seaman RNZN WWII Peacefully at Maygrove Village Hospital, Orewa (surrounded by his family) on 27 February 2011 in his 88th year. Dearly loved husband and best friend for the past 65 years of Elizabeth (Lil), much loved dad of Graham and Lyn, Clive and Pam, Phil and Sheena, Maureen and Paul. Cherished Poppa of 11 grandchildren and 9 great- grandchildren. Grateful thanks to the staff at Maygrove Village Hospital for their loving care and assistance to Ken for the past 18 months. A celebration of Ken’s life will be held at the Hibiscus Chapel of Faithfull Funeral Services, 35 Red Beach Road on Wednesday 2 March at 1.00pm followed by private cremation. Ken will be at his home 14 Marellen Dr, Red Beach between 1pm and 4pm (tomorrow) Tuesday for those who wish to pay their respect. Ken was in the RNZN Jun 1943 until Jul 1944. He served in TAMAKI, PHILOMEL, LEANDER, ACHILLES and DRAKE I.
KEMPTHORNE Alfred Vivian (Viv). O/7370 Commander (Rtd) R.N.Z.N, O.B.E. On 22nd February 2011, aged 92 years. Beloved husband of the late Joyce Elizabeth. Dearly loved father and fatherinlaw of Elizabeth (Libby), Richard and Paula, Jennifer and Steven. Much loved grandad of Robert, Katrina, Anna and Yezdi, Sarah, and Aaron, Ashley and Nina, Daniel, and Rebecca. Loved brotherinlaw of Jack and Jan. A Service will be held at the Naval Chapel of St Christopher, HMNZS Philomel (Naval Base), Queens Parade, Devonport on Friday 25 February at 1.00pm, followed by interment at North Shore Memorial Park. Commander Alfred (Viv) Kempthorne joined the Otago Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1937. He was mobilised on the Sunday war was declared in 1939 and within days was in HMS PHILOMEL after which he spent a few weeks on the Castle class trawler HMS WAKAKURA. Kempthorne spent the early years of the war in the minesweeper HMS COSGROVE in New Zealand waters. In 1941 he was posted to Britain and ended up in the shore establishments HMS VICTORY and HMS DRAKE. As a Leading Seaman onboard the minesweeper HMS HUSSAR, he experienced Russian convoy duty and for a time was based in Murmansk. He was also involved in an action in which German destroyers attacked a convoy, which resulted in the sinking of the cruiser HMS EDINBURGH.
In 1942 he was posted to the training establishment HMS KING ALFRED for officer training and spent the latter stages of the war in the battleship HMS ANSON. Kempthorne completed signals, damage control and gunnery courses in the shore establishments HMS MERCURY, HMS PRESIDENT and HMS QUEEN CHARLOTTE respectively before joining the light Fleet carrier HMS OCEAN in mid 1945. In June 1946 having been promoted to Lieutenant, he was commissioned into the Royal New Zealand Navy. In August 1948 he became the first lieutenant of the frigate HMNZS PUKAKI on commissioning. He then joined HMNZS ROTOITI in September 1950 in Korea during the civil war. After this, he became Commander of the naval wireless transmission station HMNZS IRIRANGI based at Waiouru. Service in the cruiser HMNZS ROYALIST in the late 50’s as executive officer followed. In addition to his sea time Kempthorne spent time in the personnel field in HMNZS WAKEFIELD, HMNZS TAMAKI and HMNZS PHILOMEL.
Alfred (Viv) Kempthorne retired in December 1968 having attained the rank of Commander.
WILSON Selwyn Keith (Keith). (RNZN 8441, A.B.Seaman, WWII). Passed away at Waikato Hospital on 19th February 2011. Aged 86 years. Dear husband of Ila for 62 years; loved Dad of Christine and Harvey, Margaret and Bruce, dear Poppa of Craig and Amy, Sarah and Allan, Donna and Sean, Pene and Mike, Grant and Kyly; loved great grandfather of Lachlan, Campbell, Troy, Aleisha, Hayden, Liam, Marcus, Hamish, Matthew, Abbey and James. ‘Your garden grew such lovely yield but now you reap a better field’ A service for Keith will be held at the Taupiri Rugby Club, Murphy Lane, Taupiri on Thursday 24th February at 2.00pm followed by private cremation. He served in TAMAKI, PHILOMEL, ASSEGAI and LANKA.
COSGRAVE Terence Neville (Terry). RNZN 132206. Passed away peacefully at 11.40pm on 20 February, 2011; aged 77 years. Loving husband of Constance (Connie). Loved father and fatherinlaw of Bev and Jeff Porter, Vance and Liz, Martin and Libby, Shaun and Linda, and Wayne and the late Noelene. Loved Grandad of Shane, Sarah, Laraine, Rob, Faye, Hayley, Laura, Fern, Michael, Liam and Leighton; and Great-Grandad of Josh, Liam, Hamish, Owen, Brayden, Olivia, Lyric, Cassius and Layla. HAYWARD George Te Whetu (Rocky). LREM RNZN 11463 Korea. On 20 February 2011 Peacefully after a long illness at Redwood Home and Hospital Rotorua. In his 84th year. Loved father and father in law of Cranna and Diane, Colin and Millie, Simon and Kathy, Georgianne, Quenton and Karen, Barbara- Jane (Pete) (Deceased). Sadly missed by his Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. The Tangihana is being held at Tunohopu Marae Ohinemutu Rotorua. The Funeral Service will be held on the above Marae on Wednesday 23 February 2011 at 10.00 am followed by burial at Kauae Cemetery Ngongotaha. McLEAN Peter Richard dob 19 Nov 1957 he was an Electrician and also a Ships diver. Brother of Philip McLean (Tank). He died suddenly in the early hours at Whangarei Hospital after being transferred from Kaitaia Hospital 2 Dec 2011 – aged .53yrs. The autopsy report says he died as a result of a blood clot that formed around his heart. He is buried by his mother & sister in Te Petere Urupa Manukau.Kaitaia.
SMITH Herbert Desmond (Des) LSEA BEM. NZ11678. Peacefully at home surrounded by his family on February 9, 2011, aged 79 years. ROY Bruce (Service NO. N.Z.D.2314 Lieut. RNZNVR WW 2) On 5 February 2011, at Tauranga, aged 89 years. Loved husband of the late Alison, father of Graham, Jane, Anne, Catherine, grandfather of his eight grandchildren. Private cremation on 8 February.
DALLEY Raymond Walter. RNZN OSEA NZ7574 WW2. Peacefully passed away in his 86th year. Ray left this life surrounded by his children. Much loved father of Brian, Stephen, Christine and Judith. Great friend and companion of Jan. Grandfather of Nikki, Rochelle, Sophie, Oliver, Rachel, Andrew, Emma and Gus. McLEAN Dennis Secretary of Defence 1975 – 1982 Diplomat, academic, author and senior civil servant Denis McLean died suddenly at his Wellington home this morning. He was 80 Professor McLean was ambassador to the United States from 1991 to 1994, and Secretary of Defence from 1979 until he resigned in 1988. In both jobs he had to deal with the impact of the Labour Government’s decision in 1984 to prohibit the entry of nuclear-armed and nuclear-powered vessels, a move which caused a long-lasting rift with the United States Close friend Sir John Jeffries told NZPA Prof McLean had had a “remarkable” career, as well being a distinguished rugby player, a Rhodes Scholar and a member of the Press Council, Born in Napier on August 18, 1930, Prof McLean attended Victoria University, was a Rhodes Scholar to Oxford University in England in 1954, then joined the Department of External Affairs in 1957, with postings in London, Washington, Paris and Kuala Lumpur before joining the Ministry of Defence in 1978. In 1988 he was added to The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (CMG) .He was a visiting scholar at Australian National University in Canberra, and Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the US Institute of Peace (all in Washington DC) and was Warburg professor in international relations at Boston’s Simmons College from 1995 to 1998 A keen walker and author, he wrote a book on an 800km family walking expedition along the East Coast, and others on international relations with Australia and the United States. His biography of outstanding New Zealand soldier Major-General Sir Howard Kippenberger was published in 2008 A respected and sought-after commentator on international relations, he was chairman of the Wellington Regional Trust of Te Araroa Trust for establishment of a walkway the length of New Zealand and a member of the executive management committee of QEII Army Museum in Waiouru He is survived by his wife, Anne, two sons and a daughter. WICKRAMARATNE Baboo, A good friend of the RNZN, aged 83, of Victoria, Sri Lanka, a retired civil engineer and businessman and honorary consul for Sri Lanka in Hawaii, died in Victoria. He is survived by wife Peggy, daughters Sally Mejia and Jennifer Zimmerman, brothers Roy and Glenn, and two grandchildren. Services held in Sri Lanka.

SCOTT Bruce Stewart No. 4582 Able Seaman Radar D/F Operator, RNZN – WW2; HMNZS Achilles and Gambia; Royal Navy Submarine Service (HMS Truant). Passed away peacefully at Christchurch Hospital, 9 March 2011 aged 87 years. Bruce served in TAMAKI, PHILOMEL, DUNEDIN 66S, BLUFF 1336, ACHILLES, GAMBIA, DRAKE and COOK. Bruce joined the RNZN Feb 1942 and left in Nov 1945.
CARNIE Robert John D18817 RNZN. Passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre, Alberta, Canada on March 3, 2011, after a long battle with cancer. Much loved husband of Ursula, dearly loved only son of Ian and the late Joyce Carnie, brother of Lynnlea (John) and Uncle of Nicole and Craig. Robert left St Andrews College, Christchurch to train as a helicopter pilot in the British Fleet Air Arm, RN. Before transferring to HMNZS WAIKATO as New Zealand’s first Naval Helicopter pilot. On immigrating to Canada he flew with Bow Helicopters before becoming an Aviation Air Safety Consultant where his outstanding contributions toward improving aviation safety was awarded by both Canadian and United States Governments. He also served with the United Nations in both Kosovo and Siberia. He will live in our hearts forever. A private cremation will be held. Messages to I.A. CHILTON L.J. (Les) NZ5901 Able Seaman RNZN. Les passed away on Sunday 6th March at home in Ashburton after being ill for some time. He was a WW2 veteran and served initially on the minesweepers Futurist, Breeze and Rata before heading overseas where he served for awhile with the RN in the Atlantic convoys. Les was a loyal member of the RNZNA for over 60 years and was awarded branch life membership recently. Les’s funeral will be held at St Stephen’s Anglican Church, 60 Park Street, Ashburton at 2pm this Wednesday 9th March, medals to be worn. For people who are unsure of the Church’s location – if travelling from south, turn Left after the Moore Street traffic light intersection on East Street into Tancred Street. The 1st turn on the right is Park Street with St Stephens on the right.
BARDWELL Philip Leslie OBE Commander RNZN Retired. Died peacefully at Northhaven Hospital on 3 March 2011. Loved father of Deborah and Christopher, father-in-law of Ted and Karen and Grandfather of Matthew and Amanda. Loved “adopted” father of Sunny and Steve Chae and “adopted” grandfather of Andrew and Edward. BERWICK Claud Raoul Whitcombe B.E.M., better known as Barry. NZV 102012. Chief Petty Officer, GI. on Anzac Day. Well known from his long service with HMNZS Olphert, Barry joined the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in 1938 at age 18. Mobilised in April 1940 he was sent to UK for courses and eventual draft to HMS Inchkeith, one of the four Scottish Isles Class Minesweepers purchased by the NZ Division of the RN. His subsequent service was in Minesweepers. He was discharged “Engagement Terminated” in August 1946 with the rate of Petty Officer Gunnery Instructor. In October 1948 he rejoined the RNZNVR, Wellingtron Division, with advancement to CPO in 1952, and remained with them as an Instructor until September 1959. Moving to Picton with his family in 1960 Barry was employed as a Bos’n on the Inter Island Ferries for many years. Messages to 51 York Street, Picton.
