Below is a photograph showing a man who served during the Second World War 1943 – 1946. It look like he may have been in the Army prior to joining the RNZN as 1 year and 150 days were counted to Good Service.
He wore his uniform at his wedding and from the badge displayed on his right arm you would say he was a young ‘sparker’. His Drafting Card actually gives his rank as RDF. His postings were Tamaki, Philomel, COMSPAC, Station 14, Golden Hind and lastly Cook where he was demobilised. The questions raised are as follows:
- Was this man a ‘Sparker’ or was he a Radio Direction Finding Operator or Radar Direction Finding Operator?
- Where was COMSPAC?
- Where was ‘Station 14’?
- Where or what was ‘Golden Hind’?
Now is the time for you to scratch you head!! If you think you know leave a comment and we will see what others of our association think to this minor puzzle.
