Crown House

Crown House, Morden, Surrey was the destination for thousands, perhaps millions of Ship Letter Telegrams (SLT) messages taken on ship-shore by ZLO. Especially around Christmas there was fierce competition between watches for the highest traffic total. It was an art form and the Top Guns like IKM Lee had an ability to sniff out traffic like nobody’s business.  A Ships Radio Officer only had to think about calling a shore station and ZLO was in his face offering to take his traffic.
We were pretty cheap because the prize was normally a dozen beer. Never mind, it was good fun.
Ship Letter Telegrams (SLT) were a cheap way of getting a ‘telegram’ delivered from ships at sea. Technically they arrived in the UK and were on sent by mail.
