History of Kahu ML 411:
New Zealand ordered 12 Fairmile MLs in July 1941.
The last Fairmile ML 411 (Kahu) was laid down in November 1942, launched 2 September 1943 and commissioned 20 December 1943 just 10 weeks before deployment to the Solomon Islands. There ML 411 served with the 81st Flotilla where it saw the war out in anti-submarine duties and assisting U.S. convoys.
After the war ML 411 was the only Fairmile to be retained by the RNZN and underwent some minor conversions for use as a Tamaki liberty boat with a capacity in fine weather for 250 passengers. Named Kahu, after a Maori chief who had a connection with Motuihe Island (Tamaki Base), in 1955 it bore the pendant number P3571. In 1965 it was sold to an Auckland ferry company, but lay unused at St. Marys Bay until sold in 1982 for private use. Kahu underwent extensive restoration and modification works to its current condition through out 1998.
