A Dit from an Old Salt
In the “öld days” they used to read out some of the “Ärticles of War” at Sunday Divisions (still did on the ROYALIST in 1957/58 Trip) and quote K R & A Is. and A F Os..and NZ Navy Orders. etc etc.
I don’t think they do that today. In fact, I don’t know if there are any A F Os anymore..I think they are Defence Council Instructions or something like that, but no doubt the Egyptian A F Os are still available for purchase in Port Said or Bugis Street,,, or more likely on the internet now.
However, I was sorting through some papers here over the weekend and found the attached copy of K R & A Is as they were for 1936, when King George the 6th took over from his father, K G 5….
These punishments would be considered unacceptable today, although, sadly, some of them could be of help to the prison service, I think. Giving “fines is virtually laughable and has little or no deterrent factor. Should we “Bring back the Birch” . The Youth Crime rate would drop, and Ram Raids would stop overnight.
Does this mean I am getting old and crotchety??? Sorry about that, Chief.
Nelson once said this to his captains. “There is NO discipline without punishment. But there is a BIG difference between punishment and cruelty, which I will not tolerate.”
