A Bit of History – Jeff Dykes
While searching for occasions of ROUGHERS aboard the PS Waverley I came across this picture which I had forgotten I had. Interesting nonetheless though.
Taken in the 1960’s in the English Channel out west off Falmouth. Mum [our depot ship for this occasion carrying the FLAG of Flag Officer Submarines – a Rear Admiral is in the Depot Ship HMS Adamant.
Taken by a SEA KING HELICOPTER from Culdrose Royal Navy Air Station [RNAS] at the end of an exercise bringing together the four main UK-based submarine flotilla of diesel-electric boats namely SM1 from HMS DOLPHIN Gosport, SM2 from HMS Adamant Devonport, SM3 Faslane later named HMS Neptune, and temporarily although in the process of being disbanded SM4 in HMS Maidstone Portland. Also “get around Adamant in the USA with her babies after a large US/RN submarine exercise ending in Norfolk VA
No less than 41 submarines took part ending up in several US Ports and not necessarily USN Ports, Thanks Jeff for this interesting history.
