Do You Remember?
Is there anyone out there who may have been involved or can corroborate a little bit of history stemming from HMNZS Tamaki involving some members of the Training Division. Apparently summary jurisdiction was meted out on some miscreants in the form of moving sand from the Ocean Beach (that’s on the Waiheke Island side) and across the isthmus to the beach on the jetty side. Each was issued with a spoon and the object of the exercise was to fill said spoon with sand , take off at the double and deposit the sand on the beach on the other side of the isthmus Once all had completed this task, they then reloaded their spoons and carried out the same procedure only in the opposite direction , all done in their own time. At that time Station 1ZB had a popular programme called Sunday Afternoon Listener’s Requests. One of the requests that came in and was played was requested by some anonymous serviceman down on Tamaki and had been featured on various hit parades namely :- “All day , all night Mary-Anne, down by the sea-side shifting sand “. I understand that shore leave was somewhat curtailed pending an investigation.
