Here is a picture of HMNZS Paea up on the beach at Great Barrier Island … After running into rocks in the man of war passage during the night!

That’s Paddy Long in the green rugby jersey standing on the foc’sle looking down on the lads who were attaching a big metal sheet over the huge hole we tore in her belly! Pumped her out and managed to get her back to Devonport with Kiama as escort ! If we hadn’t run her up on the beach she would have sunk.
This was either late 69 or early 70 …. Paddy Long was the sparker on Paea while Taranaki was in dry dock for a half-life refit – He can’t remember if that was before or after we went up the FES in 1970 – Traumatic Shock!!
