Anyone got $15,000
Name: Nga Taki
Type: Wooden
Length: 10.7 Metres (35 Feet)
Year: 1937
Engine: 80 HP, Inboard
Constructed of African mahogany, launched from Vospers shipyard in Portsmouth in 1937 as the Admirals Barge on the Leander until 1938, then transferred to the Achilles and was at the Battle of River Plate. At the end of the war was retained at Devonport where she was the Commodore’s Barge until 1956 and I have some photos of her transporting the Queen on her coronation tour in 1953. Post Navy her history is largely unknown. She has been in Tauranga until she broke her mooring in 2006. She has been on the hard since then and is presently on Waiheke Island under covers.
The hull requires substantial reconstruction, not so much related to the mooring incident rather to address electrolysis issues that has affected the frames and some hull planking. This is a restoration project of an extraordinary kind.

If my memory serves me right I think she was affectionately known as the “Green Parrot. ” What’s that I hear you say ? ” No, she was’nt named after that restaurant
in Durham St. West , which was just around the corner from the “Thistle”.
Is’nt this something the museum should be made aware of. historical value and all that.
And back in her origonal condition, would make an excellent tourist attraction used out on the harbour.
im sure the boat shop in the naval base could contribute to its reconstruction..
