Medal Enquiries

After the Second World War, service personnel were invited to apply for the medals for which they were eligible. Many did not do so at the time and the New Zealand Defence Force still receives applications for medals to this day.

Applying for your own medals – If you are an ex service person who has not previously been issued with the medals to which you are entitled, or you don’t know what you are entitled to, then you should write to the Staff Officer Medals giving full details of your service.

Applying for a relatives medals – if medals were never issued during the lifetime of a service person, then it may still be possible for family members to claim any medals for which their relative was entitled. Your request should be put in writing to the Staff Officer medals and supply as much detail of your relative service as you are able. You much provide documentary proof of you relationship to your relative and a copy of their death certificate of funeral notice.

Replacing your Lost Medals – Lost medals can only be replaced during the lifetime of the person to whom they were originally awarded. To apply for replacement medals you should write to the Staff Officer Medals with as much detail of your service as possible.
