Comms Messdeck HMNZS Royalist
Peter Maitland was a Leading Tel on Royalist during the ‘Long Trip’ (May 1957 t0 August 1958). In order to give some perspective to conditions and area communicators had to live in, Peter has kindly drawn a diagram of the Communicators Messdeck. All measurements are in metric and of course are approximate but not too far out. The one measurement that he knows is accurate is that the beam was 15.4m as the middle of the Barbette was 7.7m long. Twenty communicators were accommodated in this space which had room to sling 6 hammocks and maximum seating for 18 in a crush. Approximate space per communicator was less then a square metre per person.
