Naval History Lesson – HMS Philomel

HMS Philomel has had two major identities—first as a warship of the Royal Navy, and later as a key naval base in New Zealand. As a Royal Navy ship with a crew of 217. She was scuttled in1949.
- Originally launched in 1890, HMS Philomel was a Pearl-class protected cruiser.
- She served across the British Empire, including in the Mediterranean, Pacific, and Indian Ocean.
- During World War I, she was deployed in the Pacific and helped escort troops and patrol sea lanes.
Role in New Zealand
- In 1913, HMS Philomel was loaned to New Zealand, marking the beginnings of the country’s naval forces.
- She effectively became the first training ship of what would become the Royal New Zealand Navy.
- After active service, she was moored permanently in Auckland and used as a training and accommodation ship.
Modern HMNZS Philomel
- The name lives on today as HMNZS Philomel.
- Located in Devonport, it is the main administrative base of the Royal New Zealand Navy.
- While no longer a ship, it remains a symbolic “stone frigate” (a shore base with a ship’s name).
