  • Sir Lancelot enjoyed a somewhat unconventional life. In America, speak “he is one of a kind.” Notwithstanding that, he had an extraordinary sense of humor. For instance, while in Auckland attending the 2020 Reunion of those who served in HMNZS Tamaki on Motuihe Island, 1941-1963 – I took the opportunity to visit him at his Devonport home and, while chatting away without any prior warning, he screamed out, ASSHOLE! In a matter of seconds, two large Rottweiler dogs appeared. One dog is named ASS, the other HOLE. Lance never enjoyed the artifice of some of the officers. Before his RNZN retirement, he told me he planned to hire a small airplane to offload humungous buckets of horse manure in the wardroom outside the grounds. Of course, it never happened! Although Lance was not everyone’s cup of tea, I have fond memories of working/socialising with him during our time in the RNZN. Lance enjoyed life and religiously followed the Katharine Hepburn line: “If you obey all the rules – you miss all the fun!” Lance, it’s now time to rest on your arms reverse and swallow the anchor to go and mix and mingle with your fellow communicators. The side party is ready to pipe you on board, and the band is warming up to play – ‘There’s a party here tonight. ENJOY to the power of 10.
