Agent Sonya 1930s Soviet Spy – Podcast

Ursula Kuczynski Burton was recruited by Red Army intelligence in Shanghai in 1930. Author Ben Macintyre has charted how she rose to become the most decorated female spy in Soviet history under the code name ‘Agent Sonya’.

Sonya trained communist rebels in Manchuria organised a plot to kill Hitler in 1938, and while living in the English countryside, managed to feed the Soviets the design for the atomic bomb.

At the same time, she was a loving mother of 3 children who were completely unaware of her secret life. It was Sonya’s ‘perfect cover’ as a housewife that kept the MI5 and the Nazis off her scent.

This program was originally broadcasted on ABC. It is easy to listen to.  The chap telling the amazing story had written a book about this lady. Click this LINK to listen. Agent Sonya is published by Penguin.
