General Question 017

What ship and year was this taken? Looks like this ship is preparing to RAS for fuelling astern from a tanker. Perhaps the buntings could enlighten us as to what the flags mean?

    Achilles,1939

  2. albert cross says:

could be either the Leander or Achilles. (?). The upper most flag looks like Bravo ( refuelling or ammunitioning ship, or for us Sparkers- ” Man aloft -” Nothing like a good tickle-up from a Type 59 when shinning up the mast. ( what are these bloody boards for ?).
The ship’s callsign appears to have ” Mike” as the second from the bottom. The year ?. somewhere between 1939 and 1945. .

  3. John Bullock says:

I think it is one of five N Class destroyers transferred to the Royal Australian Navy for service during World War II

  4. John Bullock says:

You can see similarities between the Leander Class and the N Class
    see http://www.navy.gov.au/hmas-nestor

  5. Jim D says:

The flags from the stbd yardarm look like (top to bottom):
    Sub 4
    Juliet
    Victor
    Charlie
The flag, as Albert has said, flying from the top of the Foremast is Flag Bravo, presumably for refuelling.

  6. Chook says:

I always knew you would have made a better signalman Jim…….

  7. Casper says:
