The Devonport Naval Base shore establishment HMNZS PHILOMEL celebrated 100 years on 15th July with cakes and party food in the Vince McGlone Galley. There was also a promotion ceremony. The original HMS PHILOMEL was a Royal Navy Pearl-class cruiser loaned to New Zealand in 1914 for service in World War I. In 1921 the ship was transferred to Devonport and became a training base. The ship was fully decommissioned in 1947 and the land base took its name. Below is a photo from the celebration.
Cutting the anniversary cake are L- R Commanding Officer of HMNZS Philomel Captain Corina Bruce, youngest member OET Matthew Steedman and longest serving member LT CDR Allen Mortimer.
