After Pete left the navy, he started up household removal business, named Mana Transport in Porirua. He used to employ us watchkeepers from NCC Wellington. One particular day, Pete, myself and one other shifted a rather heavy pianola from one house to another. All went well until we got to the other house, whose drive was on a bit of a slope. Got the pianola half way down the truck’s ramp and it tilted over, fell on the ground with a “Boiiing” and landed flat on its back. Most unfortunate to say the least….

I thought that Peter continued his service in the VR after he left Pussers, as I caught up with a very tidily dressed Lt Cdr Reservist in Dunedin a few years later – or was this another McDonald ex sparker? I always believed that he was a Dunedin man as I remember travelling with him when I left Invercargill after leave, and he jjoined the train in Dunedin – but perhaps I am becoming as old and confused as the rest of you?
